Transition Year Winners of the Christmas Upcycling Challenge 2020

A Huge Congratulations to James Hawes, Jack Lynch, Conor Mc Namara, Cathal Daly and Noel Hynes, all Transition Year Students of Mary Immaculate who won first place in the Teenagers section of the recent Clare County Council Christmas Upcycling Challenge Competition 2020 for their fabulous Upcycled Christmas Trees which they made from old farmyard pallets.

This was a completely student driven and student self-motivated project, in which the students sourced locally 50 old pallets and using their imagination and initiative, repurposed such obsolete pallets to create these beautiful out door Christmas trees which they sold to raise much needed Transition Year funds for their many year group activities and projects.

This competition was driven by a Keep Well campaign which joined up with Clare County Council on the Greener Clare team, this Christmas, in promoting a Green Christmas. Christmas time is a time of year where lots of waste is created. By being creative and looking at different ways to keep items in use longer, through reusing, repairing, repurposing and upcycling, is not only good for the environment but also good for our own wellbeing.

This was a great competition which anyone of any age could enter. There are three prize categories one for children age 12 and under, one for teenagers and one for adults. Each category winner received a Clare Gift Card to the value of €100! These gift card prizes are sponsored by the Local Enterprise Office, Healthy Clare and Greener Clare. More importantly this project encouraged our students to become more imaginative and sustainable whilst looking at ways to keep Clare greener.

Well done boys, your hard work and ingenuity paid off, and is highly commended both from within and far beyond our school community.
